Stretchies updates, health stuff

Morning stretchies, just about every day lately (\o/) now consist of:

general limbering up / flailing limbs about

touch toes / floor (in 1p), and then a back bend with hands supporting lower back (Deeta)

arms out, pliee (bend knees) and twist trunk a few times before bending to each side

arms out, twist neck to each side (PT)

"trap stretch": one arm behind and the other on me head pulling gently down (1p) (PT)

next bit is arm positions, breathing, and jaw exercises (PT and ballet)

one foot (and arm) and then the other, on breaths (Alessia, Lazy Dancer Studio)

forward prayer arm and shoulder stretch (PT)

"tree" each leg, for a few seconds or breaths (ballet or Wii Yoga)

cross leg forward stretch (hamstrings) (TLS 4.0)

standing reverse, side, and forward leg stretches (each) (Garage Ballet)

with exercises after, like:

squats sets (Hinge Health et alia)

leg and foot exercises from walking class (Divina)

( some floor leg stretches (ballet class)

leg lifts sets (TLS 4.0)

Besides just documenting the shift (and filling in sources later), I need to acknowledge and celebrate how much progress I've made in my movement and health work these many years. Although it takes astonishing amounts of time, consistently stretching and exercising (and eating better) has led to weight loss, increased flexibility and balance, fewer cramps, and more mobility than I had two decades ago and plenty of progress in ten years time as well. Keep going, us!

comments

Catch-up MCU

Telly and a movie or two (Ed note: we're not endorsing the streaming services or their companies *cough*)

Frankenstein ( Netflix ) was certainly something. We really liked Wednesday, two seasons.

The Man from Earth ... is probably not a MacCloud

Pluribus ( Apple ) seems to start well, Invasion is very good ( deep characters) but hard to watch. Second Severance season was not working for us skipped ahead, [lousy] ending was no better.

All of the new Trek ( Paramount ) is actually quite good, even if you aren't sure about Trek. And if you are sure you like / know Trek, don't skip Lower Decks!

If you have the Star Trek channel, check out Kathy Bates as Matlock (?!) and an interesting spy show The Agency with Michael Fassbender.

We watched His Dark Materials again quite pleasantly. We're watching Magicians again. We started Westworld again and we seem to really like it, halfway through.

We actually liked Foundation S2 and S3 if not 1 ( Apple )

Andor S2 ( Disney ) is good but anguish to be in history here and now, haven't watched the rest. Most other new Disney Wars shows are just terrible.

Wayward (Netflix) with Toni Colette was really good. Watched that straight through one Caturday, captivated.

There's a Dune show on HBO. Sort of. Anyway the costumes and sets are fantastic.

Peacemaker S2 ( HBO ) was surprisingly phenomenally good despite not liking the first season and giving up quickly. The humour is razor sharp and surprising.

Gunn's Creature Commandos is also very good.. though that's less surprising since DC animation has long been consistently excellent.

I actually liked the new Superman, but you don't have to have watched it closely to enjoy Peacemaker S2

Books and Graphic Novels:

Travis Baldree's third novel Brigands and Breadknives

working on The Dark Is Rising Sequence, Susan Cooper

Think Weirder 01, Editor: Joe Stech

Marvelous graphic novel miniseries discoveries via Neon Ichiban:

The Autumnal and Blasfamy

The Nice House by the Sea

A Philosophy of Thieves , Fran Wilde

The Expanse series, James S. A. Corey ( finally ): three books in

five Discworld books about M. Tiffany Aching , including his last one, Terry Pratchett

Sunstone vol 8 and Crimson vol 1 ( graphic adult novels)

Redemption Ark, Alastair Reynolds

A Witches Guide to Magical Innkeeping, Sangu Mandanna

Murderbot novels, Martha Wells

finished ACoTaR, Sarah J. Maas

Two more novels after All Souls trilogy, Deborah Harkness

Katee Roberts Vampire Queen trilogy, Dark Olympus series

comments

Summer Vacation 2025 - MCU

Fall; or Dodge in Hell by Neal Stephenson

an Antisyphon class live online

logic puzzle help book, not very helpful I'm afraid

Sweet Obsession (Dark Olympus) by Katee Robert

finished She-Ra (2020)

far too much The Vampire Diaries (2010)

a little Dune:Awakening (2025) which is lovely and interesting, but way too hard to be a game for me

sketched a mindless doodle once

finally leveled up my ship in current mobile game

stumbled through gana/kana trying to read Inuyasha manga, Volume 1, to page 13 so far

and hardly anything on the "vacation things" list(s). Happy solstice, holidays, anyone!

comments

Happy May, Happy Beltane!

Some notices for today:

It's Pride Day everyday outside for the "duration of the emergency"

Hope you [fine folk] like rainbows!

With the turn of the heavens from Dragon to Snake, so ends an era of experiments and research

Going to turn slowly from "trying new stuff" to focusing and improving what we have

Only Netflix has robust multi-language support for streaming videos (still, years later)

All of the streaming service apps are terrible and keep getting worse.

Health and fitness?

Daily-ish stretching is mostly on track. Progress versus 3-5 years ago is remarkable and I should celebrate it more. Brains are specifically bad at staying on that and appreciating enough.

I can do rises and pliees freestanding, and even get into Tree pose for a few breaths!

None of those things were possible without a chair, door frame, or risk of a bad fall years ago.

Got back into the home gym for a TLS 4.0 workout (at light weights) for the first time this year.

That needs to be three times a week again, starting next week.

Numbers are okay and may have arrested the slide away from goals that started in the election/holiday season late last year.

Need to make time to read more novels, have a few queued up in series we follow and enjoy (it's not smut; it's cliterature!)

How about y'all?

comments

Convention report: Stellar Fest Atlanta 2025

I went with a mixed group of family and friends for two of the three days of Stellar Fest a small sci-fi convention in Atlanta, GA this past weekend. We did some trade with their merchants (bought pretty coats), saw a few interesting panels (Space Archaeology!), and generally had a great time. The con staff were very helpful and there were many signs and maps posted to help us find everything.

For the Federation and T'HY'LA: I was able to meet a few Trek fans and gave out some of the Federation/T'HY'LA cards. I made friendly diplomatic contact with Starfleet, another Trek fan organization who had a table there. They were very welcoming and freely admitted that both orgs are trying to the same things and many people are members of both and they invited me to join.

https://stellarfest.org/

https://sfi.org/

comments

Health journey update 3Q2024

Clearing out a queue of health updates as summer scorches into autumn ...

Balance is slowly improving and I have added some extra movement to some stretches

Have lots of great equipment at home now, struggling to make good use of all of it in a week

Sleeping late is one of the biggest challenges to getting daily exercises done first thing

Stretch / exercise before lunch works pretty well when I can do it

Breakfast continues to be an open question, but a few days of having breakfast and not having any lunch until the early afternoon seemed to work quite well ... that's a strong vote for breakfast, because it won't work without some oatmeal or something first thing in the morning

Weight fluctuates / doesn't go down like I want, but is actually quite stable over time these months

Other measures (body fat, tape) are unreliable overall but sometimes suggest improvements

Sizes also seem pretty stable, and I'm trying on new sizes and styles of clothes

Flipped through another, much better aerial yoga (thothil) book, but need other resources to find the exercises I want

Probably going to have to sift through more YouTube videos

(x-post) I started back up strength training following TLS 4.0 more closely.

Learning new exercises and making four sessions a week are the challenges so far ...

Managed 4 sessions first week, technically (Sunday end of week?)

Tracking in app but also scribbling in the One Year Challenge book feels good.

Getting compliments and positive remarks about muscle development from family

Trying to see it and believe it myself ...

comments

Summer vacation / MCU

Starting up the MCU list for traditional "on our summer vacation week" post, hoping to expand it a bit ...

books:

Dark Restraint (Dark Olympus 7) by Katee Robert

The Assassin Game by Kirsty McKay

Revelation Space (Inhibitors trilogy) by Alastair Reynolds

New Adventures in Space Opera (anthology)

Traditional Aerial Yoga by Dr. Kavitha Moahan

Academy I (Academy Works book one) by Mia Moore

movies:

Evil Under the Sun and Death on the Nile ( Ustinov, 20C )

Weird Science (Hughes, 20C)

telly:

Evil (series finale, Star Trek Channel)

finished up current season of Dr Who on Disney Channel

speeches and odd musical acts from Chicago (YouTube)

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (finished Season 4)

magazine:

Vogue (US) September

nail polish

OPI Start to Finish

This has been your irregular #MediaConsumptionUpdate. On the #health theme, I started back up strength training following TLS 4.0 more closely. Learning new exercises and making four sessions a week are the challenges so far ...

Other activities around the house: tried on and put away many things, organised jewelry, dressed dolls, stretched almost every day, studied a chunk of current online class (including doing labs to excess quite pleasantly) and watched most of a two day conference online I wanted to see. Oh, and I got a talk accepted, but more about that elsemush...

How about anyone else? What are you up to ?

comments

Goals, Ostarae, Progress

I have come quite a ways in health and related topics, and before I set some new goals out loud it is good practice to acknowledge and give myself credit for the work thus far. Also, my goals are shifting because I've gotten so much done and made so many changes successfully.

I get cold now, but I have wraps and cardigans.

I can balance some on one leg and can often put my socks on standing up.

I have lost weight and even body fat. Several people have complimented my appearance in the last few months and acknowledge these changes.

I'm stretching almost every day and have been doing weekly strength training this year, inspired if not quite following TLS.

#health #mcu

comments

Feb already ? Tempus fugit dolor sic amet ?

Life and health?

Continuing to do three sets of stretches almost every day, including some balance work that might actually be gaining ground slowly. It's a struggle every day to leave the blankets and get up to stretch ... but that's not the stretches fault, is it? Meanwhile the stretching and the food journaling seem to be enough to keep me slowly losing weight and (early data) body fat ... so this is all great progress on long-term health #goals.

I've already bought / registered/ started more online classes for the year than I can probably do, and that's before $work makes their selections, and without going back to college neither.

Hanguel or Korean practice (much less learning) has fallen off and I've been thinking about taking another run at ta'Hol though it is a really tough language to learn. Blame or creditST:Discovery or credit with giving plenty of practice material. There are entire speeches and monologues, and some romance, in thlingon Hol in that show!

MCU

School for Good and Evil

I still enjoy and appreciate the School for Good and Evil Netflix movie and i finally read the book, which is pretty great. The author has been heavily involved in the movie and I think it gave her the opportunity to do things she couldn't / didn't want to do with the mode and perspective of the book so it's a nice addition, like every new version of Adam's HHGTTG.

ST:Discovery

We just started Season 3 (of 5) and are really enjoying it. The production value and quality of the thing is impressive and sometimes shocking. They must have spent way too much $$ on it, ha.

Legends & Lattes

Finally read this one after a few recommendations and was pleasantly surprised by it and how much I liked every aspect of it. Great first success for Travis and I want to read the next one. The romance between characters is handled ever so gently for the characters and the reader ... everything is handled carefully and executed well.

Monstress

Finally read a few more volumes of this magnificent literature (as a graphical novel published by Image Comics) and need to keep going. Strongly recommend to everyone for every reason: art, story, characters and themes ... word building and creature design ... secret history of cat civilisation

Midnight Ruin (Dark Olympus)

Yummy smut with a hard, brutal storyline to keep thing interesting, next to last book in a great series.

comments

End of 23 health sum up, MCU

Health and fitness

With some variance and some set backs factored in, it's been a good health year for me and I've done well with my programme of establishing and keeping healthier habits. I've apparently even netted some compliments (!?). I've started (back) with a food tracking app after one other experiment reminded me how far off my ideas about my macronutrients were from what I actually consume, having a think about tracking overall, and re-checking some of my measurement this week. And I got through family holiday visits without too much overeating or junk food, possibly. All with daily stretches, if not much exercise. And you? What are you working on to feel better?

MCU starts here

Reacher Season 2 is ridiculous and enjoyable ... and Gen V (a Boyz spin-off) was better than we expected (I'm crediting Kripke's influence over the writing and design) (both on Amazon Video, though Reacher S1 can be purchased on DVD)

Rebel Moon was long and terrible, and seemed very expensive to make. We did have fun with our commentary at least.

movies Poor Things and Saltmist are both very weird and interesting. If you've any interest I recommend seeing them before reading anything about either. Of the two, Poor Things is much better and more interesting.

new Dr Who for 2023 has been quite fun so far and touching in spots (Doctor-Donna) (I'll watch the 4th special shortly)

not entirely unrelated, Sex Education is one of the best shows ever on telly, not just the best one about sex or teenagers (and possibly other topics)

less related but interesting and funny: Sexify, a Polish show about college students, sex, and ... an app ?

I briefly sampled the new Scott Pilgrim show and am very excited. I finally read the graphic novels this year and that made me love the movie even more, strangely enough.

I've read two of the four "Year of Sanderson" novels and am delighted with them both. Definitely one of my better dumb Kickstarter pledges. Tress of the Emerald Sea may well be a classic and Frugal Wizard... was a really fun read. Both have great audio versions.

The illustrated hardbacks are beautiful and they still have some in stock.

En----n

For a number of reasons this year I'd been reducing my Patreon spend and signing up to creators elsewhere. Then, Patreon pulled a new, predictable dumb stunt which has accelerated that process. If anyone reading this was impacted, please ping and I'll try to help.

comments

Dec update / MCU

At the end of the year I'm clinging to progress on health: weight, flexibility, and better habits. Daily (almost) stretching is focused on treating or reducing injuries, rather than the stretching and movement I'd like to be working on.

After reading Sir Patrick Stewart's autobiography this fall, I actually wanted to watch his new Star Trek show. So, due to that and holiday timing I have watched about three seasons of ST:Picard and a year-ish of Dr Who (three specials is what we get) ... just this weekend. Which dosage is probably inadvisable ...

While I have some light-hearted review-type thoughts about the programmes, plots, contemporary political material and *cough* ret-cons ... I noticed and was touched by some themes across both shows. So, whether it is notable that the themes were so strong in these programmes or it is notable that they were visible to and resonated with me, here-now ... Oh, and yes, spoilers aplenty.

( Science fiction uses the impossible and alien to tell human stories and ask the most challenging questions in literature. Anyway, onto the spoilers and drivel. )

Anywho, how are y'all?

comments

September, ended

I think I am past the worst of a tough bit and besides flagging that I think I did some things right that made it better this time ... even if I more or less caused the trouble.

Some long running concerns from $dayjob work particularly this year (but ever so much more) really seemed to escalate in the middle of the month. At around the same time I was struggling more and more to find energy to do things, not just at work but around the house and in life. And I was slacking off on exercise and stretching ... correlated with some muscle weakness I was wary of or just annoyed at (stoopid knee). And ... I gained some weight. Not much really, but the lines headed in the wrong direction and I did not like it.

So in some order and mostly on purpose I:

Took a mental health day and booked a vacation

Looked for new job opportunities and pinged my outside network, did some calls & an interview

Picked up stale outreach tasks to some internal allies, booked meetings and lunches

Discussed my concerns with family and friends and an ally or two at work

Heard lots of other viewpoints, got some great advice

Wrote and rewrote some email ... that I did not send

Went off coffee (!?)

Kept stretching every morning I could, and dressed out for stretching even when I didn't

Kept trying to eat well and weigh in and measure mostly on schedule

Permitted some deliberate retail therapy

And I think it helped. Partners at work are helping break through some of the worst of the coordination and confusion problems. Despite what my brain might have been convinced of to a certainty only a couple weeks ago we are all working together and trying to improve things ... while politics and budgets and other strains remain.

Today I woke up in bed in the dark at some ungodly hour. My brain had a brilliant scheme for how to organize part of my closet and I was hungry or thirsty. So, a few minutes later I got up, moved a couple things in the closet to start that bit, got dressed and grabbed a shake (and caught up my journal including this).

Contrast not being able to sleep or snooze (two weeks ago) because brain won't stop imagining arguments about work and I much prefer this ... even if it is a bit early. Cat-beasts got an extra snack out of it, so they have no present complaints. I've also read more books in the last couple weeks than I've been able to in awhile ... I'm not sure the causal link there but it's interesting and another positive.

How is anyone else managing? Can I help? I need to go stretch out.

comments

July updates

Mostly getting onto floor mornings to stretch legs back and hips. Missing exercises (but hardly ever stretches) by over-snoozing and not leaving myself enough time weekday mornings ... yuck.

Exercises for July have been like:

rises bras in 1 2 3 3 4 4 5 5 held for 3 or 4

pliee bras (set of 5) in 1 2 3 3 4 4 5 5

most grande , some double sets

some reversed: back (etc) on barre for better posture

Nights quite regularly:

2 sets of rises 1 2 3 3 4 4 5 5, or once three (slower each time)

Just this week with shoe try-ons and rises, maybe some flipper bones mobility? Hard to say if this is progress or worsening, for flipper bones.

comments

April & May: daily stretching and exercise ?!

April

mornings, often between caffeine doses:

standing, limbering stretches, including one rep of PT stretches

feet set or leg set

feet (with arms so "bras"): battement tendu (round), jete (2*round), rhon du jambe (a/d)

legs (with arms so "bras): developpe: 2 sets each held for 4 breaths

pliee: 3 sets of 5

May

mornings, often between caffeine doses:

standing, limbering stretches, including one rep of PT stretches

feet, legs, and plie (most days)

or just feet OR legs and pliee

And nightly, rises to stretch feet (ala TPPB). By mid-May this is 3 sets of 5 in 1rst 2nd 3rd (both) 4th (both) and 5th (both) .. mine anyway

And all while trying to:

breathe from diaphragm through nose

improve positions and form (arms!)

bend my [...] knees

*grumble* keep my turnout, as much as I have anyway

This has also led to a more stable pattern of daily weigh-ins and weekly measurement, so hopefully that data will be useful. That bit is definitely inspired by TLS. Speaking of the floor daemon, weight has done okay in this time period, osciallating gently around the new goal by a kilo or so throughout the week. The other data from the floor daemon (or the tape) isn't consistent enough to take too seriously. Por ejemplo: I doubt I lost 20 lbs of muscle between readings this month .. since I didn't lose that much at all ?! Meh #scale.

Besides the details of the stretches, this means that I have been stretching and exercising daily for almost two months straight, and still going! This is a Big Deal and a major #goal I've been struggling with intentionally for a few years now (plus whole life).

ETA:It is vastly more important to keep going than to do tough exercise everyday. I can add more "reps and weight" ala TLS when I need to.. but I have to strengthen this habit.

Also in May I survived and learned some things from a six day straight online course $work paid for on some very advanced stuff, including some maths that I wanted to flee from and hide (like any reasonable creature), but did not and some tough programming that I kept trying on even though I couldn't complete most of them. Powered by extra daily caffiene and getting behind on chores, Hausarbeit, and other studies ... seem to have scraped by (never mind the buckets of laundry over there).

What to read ?

After I got the Nespresso into my circulatory system I dawdled for several minutes at the to-read bookcase trying to select something to read today.

I read the first few pages, cover blurb, or prologue of:

One Hundred Years of Solitude, Marcia Marquez

Illium, Dan Simmons

Glory Season, Brin

Elantris, Brandon Sanderson

The Bridge, Ian Banks

Oh, and I asked the famous chat-bot to confirm the universes of the novels as a sort of decision support. They seem to think that Elantris is in Cosmere (as is everything Sanderson has created) and that The Bridge might be in the Culture universe but is standalone. Those responses were cogent and confident and I haven't fact checked them, so, that's as expected. It doesn't understand Russian pleasantries and promises that it is studying Spanish ... Either sort of language practice would be more useful to me than unreliably looking up unverified information from The Miasma, so.

How about anyone else? What are you reading today or up to this weekend? I think it's the Ian Banks today for me.

comments

August was a declared study break (MCU)

August was a declared study break, and it's almost over ...
( or skip the personal stuff and read the MCU )

ETA: MCU as promised

I really like the new Liz Phair album, Soberish. That and a new (to me) Katzenjammer album A Kiss Before You Go are on replay in my head/ house along with other pretties like Okumuki.

Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next books are delightful, I think I've had four so far and I'm trying to pace myself.

The Black Widow MCU Disney movie was pretty good, if almost ten years late.

new Netflix series Brand New Cherry Flavor was lots of fun and is very dark, violent and gross

"It's different if it's kittens."

new Disney What If MCU show first episode was really great, beautiful animation, great voice acting, and a neat story

so far the only thing watchable on Apple+ is For All Mankind which starts really interesting and then turned really dramatic. We haven't finished S1 because we honestly needed a break from all of the character drama that came from the plot, which is still quite interesting.

they also have a show about blind post-human something ... we jumped out before the 10 minute mark

comments

MCU and some thoughts on practice

Some books I've been reading / listening to continue to provide both motivation and practical ideas for some work I've long wanted to do ... or tried to start many times without succeeding. They also overlap every now and then even though they are guides to different paths which I fine pretty interesting and encouraging.

( books and practice )

Cat

The cat beast Chani, who made her first Internet appearance on this journal many years ago, is still hanging around after a health scare last month and despite being well, almost fifteen years old. We suspect she hates us too much to leave ... *shrug*

comments
